After a Car Accident: Getting Ready for Your Appointment

A practical appointment checklist after a car accident: organize your questions, describe changes in daily activities, and bring relevant records.

After a car accident, you may have questions you do not want to forget when you sit down with a clinician. A few notes can give that conversation a useful starting point.

This checklist is about preparing for an appointment. It cannot tell you what an injury is or which treatment you need. If you have a medical emergency, call 911 rather than waiting for an office visit.

Write down what you want to discuss

Start with your most important question. Describe any symptoms in your own words, including when you first noticed them and whether they have changed. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis.

If a daily activity has become uncomfortable, give a specific example: turning to look behind you, sitting through your commute, or getting comfortable at night. Explain what is different from before the accident without trying to label the cause yourself.

Gather the information you already have

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, relevant medical records, and any instructions from clinicians who have already seen you. Tell the office about earlier evaluations so you can ask which records would be useful to share. You can find more general preparation tips in the National Institute on Aging's appointment guide.

Leave room for questions

Before you leave, ask the clinician to explain anything you did not understand. Questions might include:

  • What did you learn from today's evaluation?
  • What are the next steps, and why?
  • Is there anything I should discuss with another clinician?
  • How should I contact the office if I have a follow-up question?

Take notes or ask someone you trust to accompany you if that would help you follow the conversation.
